Starting GLP-1: what changes about eating?
If you are considering GLP-1 medication like Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro, your plate changes more than you think: appetite drops, you fill up faster and fatty or large meals backfire immediately. This page plainly explains what that means, what it roughly costs and which steps to take first with your doctor. This is orientation, not medical advice.

What actually changes on your plate?
The medication slows stomach emptying and curbs hunger. In practice that means: 4 to 5 small meals instead of 3 big ones, protein first then the rest, and fat, fried food, alcohol and fizzy drinks that more often cause symptoms. Thirst drops too, so drinking becomes a conscious task of 1.5 litres a day. Knowing that upfront avoids week-1 shock.
- Protein becomes your most important nutrient: 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilo per day.
- Nausea is strongest in the build-up weeks and after each increase.
- Eating habits that keep working after stopping matter more than month-1 kilos.
What does it cost in Belgium and the Netherlands?
Do not count on reimbursement for weight loss. In Belgium, Wegovy for weight is not reimbursed and quickly costs 145 to 230 euros a month, depending on dose and pharmacy. Ozempic is only reimbursed under conditions for type 2 diabetes, with stricter approval since 2026. In the Netherlands, separate reimbursement rules apply via the health insurer, often only after a lifestyle programme. Always check your insurer before starting, amounts change yearly.
How to start sensibly
Step 1 is always your doctor: only they judge whether medication suits you and which dose fits. Never experiment yourself with other people’s pens or orders without a prescription; the medicines agency warns against that too. Step 2 is your protein plan: calculate your goal with the planner on the homepage and read the nausea page before your first injection. Step 3 is your environment: small containers, a weekly menu and someone who knows you eat smaller portions.
Short answers
Frequently asked questions
Must I lose weight first before starting?
It depends on indication, BMI and your doctor. Reimbursement often has conditions like a lifestyle programme. Your doctor judges whether and when medication fits.
Can I keep eating what I eat now?
Unlikely. Big fatty portions quickly cause symptoms on GLP-1 medication. Most people switch to smaller protein-rich meals. See the day menu for an example.
What if I stop the medication?
Research shows weight quickly returns without lasting lifestyle. Build eating habits during the programme that also work without medication: protein first, small portions, enough fibre and fluids.
