What to eat with nausea on Ozempic?

Nausea is the most reported side effect in the first weeks and after each Ozempic dose increase. It often peaks in the 24 to 48 hours after the weekly injection. No need to push through on an empty stomach: small, bland cold food usually stays down. The advice below is guidance, not medical advice.

Cup of ginger tea for nausea

What usually stays down

Choose dry bland things with little smell: toast, crackers, rice, boiled potato, banana, apple sauce, broth and cold dairy like yoghurt and quark. Protein still matters on nauseous days: a small bowl of quark or a protein shake counts just as much as a hot meal.

  • Eat something small 4 to 5 times instead of 3 meals.
  • Cold food smells less and sits lighter than hot food.
  • Sip water, broth or ginger tea through the day.

What most often makes nausea worse

Fat and fried food slow stomach emptying even further on top of the medication. Spicy food, strong-smelling dishes, sweet desserts and large portions are the other classic triggers. Alcohol and fizzy drinks make it worse for many people too. Skip it for a day if in doubt, catch up tomorrow.

When to contact your doctor?

If you cannot keep fluids down for 24 hours, vomit after almost everything, feel dizzy or faint, or lose weight fast without eating, contact your doctor. That is beyond what food can fix.

Short answers

Frequently asked questions

How long does nausea last on Ozempic?

Usually strongest in the first weeks and shortly after a dose increase, often 24 to 48 hours after the injection. For most people it eases as the body adjusts. If it stays severe, discuss it with your doctor.

Does staying on an empty stomach help?

No, an empty stomach often makes nausea worse. Small amounts of bland food and small sips work better than eating nothing.

Can I take something for nausea?

Decide that together with your doctor or pharmacist, not on your own. What you can do yourself is eat smaller, avoid fatty and spicy food, and drink calmly.
