Constipation on Ozempic: fibre and fluids

Constipation is among the most reported gut complaints on Ozempic: you eat less volume so less comes in, and bowel movement slows too. The fix is rarely a one-off cure but a daily routine of fibre plus fluids plus movement. Build fibre gently; lots of fibre fast without drinking makes it worse. This is guidance, not medical advice.

Oatmeal with fruit for fibre

Step plan in 2 weeks

Week 1: add 1 fibre portion a day to what you already eat, for example oatmeal at breakfast or lentils in soup, and drink an extra half litre of water with it. Week 2: move to 25 to 30 grams of fibre a day from ordinary food and 1.5 to 2 litres of fluids. Move half an hour daily, walking counts. No result after 2 weeks or hard stomach pain: see your doctor.

  • Oatmeal, wholegrains, lentils, beans, chickpeas, vegetables and fruit.
  • Drink a big glass of water with every fibre-rich meal.
  • Keep moving daily, your bowels move along.

Fibre-rich combinations that suit GLP-1

Always combine fibre with protein, ticking two goals at once: lentil soup with chicken, chilli with beans, yoghurt with oatmeal, wholegrain wrap with hummus and egg. The planner marks fibre-rich meals so you can consciously choose them with constipation.

What not to do?

White flour as the base of everything, big portions of cheese without vegetables, iron supplements on your own and fibre supplements without extra fluids. If you take other medication, check with the pharmacist whether fibre affects absorption.

Short answers

Frequently asked questions

How much fibre per day on Ozempic?

Aim for 25 to 30 grams a day from ordinary food and build up over 1 to 2 weeks. Drink at least 1.5 litres with it, otherwise fibre backfires.

Does coffee help constipation?

For some people coffee stimulates bowel movement, but it replaces neither fibre nor fluids. Keep to 1 to 2 cups and drink water alongside, especially with reflux.

When to see a doctor for constipation?

If no improvement after 2 weeks despite fibre and fluids, with hard stomach pain, blood in stool or vomiting. Do not wait.
